Mitten in den Vorbereitungen des Baubeginns für die Mädchen-Toiletten kommt die lang ersehnte gute Nachricht. Die Unterstützung unseres ehrenamtlichen Projektteams für das  eigenständige Projekt der Rotary Klubs Kyotera und Dänischer Wohld wurde gerade mit einem Rotary Global Grant  an die beiden Klubs zur Finanzierung der nächsten Projektstufe belohnt: „Your global grant application for funding to improve water and sanitation at The Divine Mercy Secondary School with the provision of a new well and underground cistern. A filtration system will be provided for drinking water. Six new latrine stances will be built and hygiene education will be provided to the school and community leaders, submitted by the Rotary Club of Kyotera, and the Rotary Club of Dänischer Wohld, has been approved by The Rotary Foundation. The award is in the amount of US$ 50,106.00.“

Für die Schule bleibt die Umsetzung der Standard Operating Procedures - auch finanziell - herausfordernd: Dazu gehören auch die Gewährleistung eines Abstandes von zwei Metern zwischen Lernenden und Lehrenden, das obligatorische Tragen von Masken, Handwascheinrichtungen und das routinemäßige Testen von von Schüler/-innen und Mitarbeitern. Die Schulen müssen außerdem ein Isolationsraum für Covid-19-Verdachtsfälle einrichten, einen Gesundheitsassistenten und geschultes Personal einstellen, um unter anderem Temperatur-Messungen durchzuführen.

Mehr als die Hälfte der Schüler/-innen ist noch nicht zurückgekehrt und die Schulleitung ist nicht sicher, ob sie überhaupt zurück kommen werden. Die wenigsten Eltern sind auf die zusätzlichen Kosten vorbereitet, wie beispielsweise „Boarding“, ein verpflichtendes Wohnen auf dem Schulgelände, als eine der Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung der Pandemie. Die Schulleitung und die Eltern haben jedoch vereinbart, dass sich die Schüler für das erste Trimester zurückmelden können - vorerst unter Aussetzen der Schul- und Prüfungsgebühren.

Building beyond – next step secured

Right in the middle of start of construction works on the girls' toilets comes the long-awaited good news. The implementation of the Standard Operating Procedures remains challenging for the school - also financially: Among others they include ensuring a two-metre distance between learners and teachers, compulsory wearing of masks, hand washing facilities and routine screening of students and staff. The schools must also set up an isolationroom for Covid-19 suspects, recruit a health assistant and full time trained personnel to do temperature screening.

More than half of the student population have not turned up yet and the school administration is not sure whether they will come back. Most parents had not prepared for extra costs, including boarding, which are the result of coronavirus-related restrictions. However, the school management and parents have agreed to let the students report with the fees balance for the first term, including registration fees.
