Nachdem das erste Team von Ingenieure ohne Grenzen in Wanga, Kenia verabschiedet wurde, ist nun das zweite Team angereist. Auch diese beiden Ausreisenden wurden herzlich von unserem Projektpartner willkommen geheißen und sind gut angekommen. Dabei fiel deren Anreise in eine besondere Zeit: Wichtige Wahlen standen in Kenia bevor!
Schon bei den Vorbereitungen fällt eine Besonderheit auf: Die Einfuhr von Einweg-Plastiktüten ist verboten. Damit will die Regierung der Verschmutzung der Umwelt entgegenwirken. Und tatsächlich ist auf den Straßen kaum Plastiktütenmüll zu sehen. Bei der Fahrt vom Flughafen zum Projekt erstaunte unsere Ausreisenden außerdem, dass freilaufende Tiere Teil des Straßenverkehrs sind. Kühe, Esel oder Hühner legen den Verkehr immer mal wieder kurzzeitig lahm. Nur selten räumen sie die Fahrbahn nach aufforderndem Hupen. Stattdessen suchen sich die Autos, Matatus (Kleinbusse) und Piki-Pikis (Motorräder des öffentlichen Personennahverkehrs) einen ausweichenden Weg.
Generell war es am Ankunftstag auf den Straßen und in den Städten sehr ruhig. Am 09. August wurde in Kenia gewählt. Neben dem Präsidenten wurden dabei die Mitglieder der Nationalversammlung und des Senats sowie die Gouverneur*innen der Countys und die Mitglieder der County-Parlamente gewählt. Außerdem wurde in jedem Wahlbezirk eine Frauen-Repräsentantin bestimmt, die in der Nationalversammlung stimmberechtigt ist. Damit wurden an einem Tag sechs Positionen gewählt. Dazu sind viele Kenianer*innen in ihre Heimat gefahren, um dort zu wählen. Bemerkenswert ist das breite politische Interesse im Land. So ist das Wählen keine schnelle, einmalige Sache, sondern wird mit Familie und Freunden zelebriert. Da es bei den letzten Wahlen immer wieder zu Unregelmäßigkeiten und teilweise auch zu Ausschreitungen gekommen ist, waren viele Kenianer*innen auf den Verlauf der Wahlen gespannt. Außerdem hatten viele Betriebe geschlossen und viele Schulen hatten Ferien während dieser Zeit. Fünf Tage nach den Wahlen steht der gewählte Präsident immer noch nicht fest. Auf der einen Seite sind alle gespannt auf das Ergebnis, auf der anderen Seite läuft nun das gewohnte Leben wieder an und die Straßen füllen sich mit Leben.
Durch die Wahlen haben auch die Bauarbeiten am Early Bird Education Centre pausiert. Seit der Abreise des letzten Teams wird wieder gebaut, hauptsächlich am Fundament für das erste neue Schulgebäude. Dazu wird der Boden ausgeglichen und verdichtet, unter tragenden Elementen wird ein Steinfundament eingebracht. Die darauffolgenden Schritte wurden geplant und das benötigte Materialien bestellt. In den nächsten Wochen kann also weitergebaut werden: die nächste Zeit wird sicher spannend.

After saying goodbye to the first team of Engineers without Borders from Wanga, Kenya, the second team has arrived now. The next two departures were also warmly welcomed by our project partner and arrived safely. Their arrival coincided with a special time: Important elections were about to take place in Kenya!
Already during the preparations, one peculiarity stands out: The import of disposable plastic bags is prohibited. This is the government's way of counteracting environmental pollution. And indeed, there is hardly any plastic bag rubbish to be seen on the streets. On the drive from the airport to the project site, our departing travellers are also surprised to see that free-roaming animals are part of the road traffic here. It can happen that cows, donkeys or chickens paralyse the traffic for a short time. Only rarely do they clear the lane after sounding their horns. Instead, the cars, matatus (minibuses) and piki-pikis (public transport motorbikes) look for an evasive route.
In general, it was very quiet on the streets and in the cities on the day of arrival. Elections were held in Kenya on 09. august. In addition to the President, the members of the National Assembly and the Senate as well as the governor (s) of the counties and the members of the county parliaments were elected. In addition, a women's representative was appointed in each constituency, who is entitled to vote in the National Assembly. Thus, six positions were elected in one day. For this purpose, many Kenyans travelled to their home countries to vote. The broad political interest in the country is remarkable. Voting is not a quick, one-time thing, but is celebrated with family and friends. As the last elections had repeatedly led to irregularities and sometimes riots, many Kenyans were eager to see how the elections would go. In addition, many businesses were closed and many schools were on holiday during this period. Five days after the elections, the elected president is still not known. On the one hand, everyone is eagerly awaiting the result, on the other hand, life is getting back to normal and the streets are filling up with life.
Due to the elections, construction work at the Early Bird Education Centre has also been paused. Since the last team left, construction has resumed, mainly on the foundation for the first new school building. For this purpose, the ground is being levelled and compacted, and a stone foundation is being laid under load-bearing elements. Furthermore, the following steps were planned and necessary materials were ordered. Thus, construction can continue in the next few weeks, the next period will certainly be exciting.
